Our Story
About
Hi! We’re siblings, certified swim instructors, and the team behind Barlas Swim School — a local East York-based business offering private and semi-private swim lessons for kids.
We teach lessons either in our backyard pool or in the comfort of yours, offering flexible scheduling to fit each family’s routine. Our goal is to make swim lessons simple, convenient, and stress-free.
We work exclusively with kids and youth, focusing on building water confidence, improving technique, and creating a fun and supportive learning environment. Whether it’s a child’s first time in the water or they’re working on more advanced skills, we tailor each lesson to meet their individual needs.
We believe swimming is one of the most important life skills, and our backyard-based approach makes it more personal, approachable, and effective for young swimmers!
Nikola Barlas
Hey I’m Nikola! I'm 21 years old, a certified lifeguard, and heading into my final year at Queen’s University, where I study Commerce. I started Barlas Backyard Swim with my brother because we both love working with kids and wanted to create a swim experience that feels more personal than your typical lessons. I focus mostly on teaching in clients’ backyards, which I love because it helps kids feel relaxed and confident in a space that’s familiar to them.
Outside the pool, I’m usually playing soccer, going for a run, or spending time with friends. I also love to travel and recently completed a semester abroad in Australia, which definitely reaffirmed my love for swim and being in the water!
George Barlas
Hey, I’m George! I’m 18 and just finished my first year studying Business at Wilfrid Laurier University. I’ve been teaching swim lessons for the past three summers and started Barlas Backyard Swim with my sister to grow the business and be able to offer lessons to more families in the community. I primarily teach in our backyard pool, where kids can feel comfortable and focused.
When I’m not teaching, I’m usually playing soccer, hockey, or out golfing with friends. I’m looking forward to another great summer in the water and meeting new families along the way!

Our backyard pool is located in East York — and parents are always welcome to stay and watch during lessons!
